PRO Grant Money Used by Parent Council to Benefit all Students at Peel School

PRO Grant Money (Parents Reaching Out) is provided by the government of Ontario to benefit schools and school children all across Ontario. Caledon East Public School has made wise use of their PRO Grant money. They sponsored a Stand Up To Bullying Day with speaker/presenter Bruce Langford of Stand Up Now Productions.

Bruce Langford presented his interactive ‘Stand Up Against Bullying’ assemblies for all the students of the school. Later, the students brought parents back to learn about the internet, cyber-safety and bullying prevention. The parent session was called ‘Stand Up – Keep Your Kids’.
Parent Council Chair, Mrs. Jan McFadyen, felt the money was well spent. More than twenty-five families attended the evening session, representing a good percentage of the school population. Some of the comments made by parents following the presentation were:

“Excellent information and a great way to present it!”

“Bruce made the presentation very interesting and easy to follow.”

“This format kept the interest of both parents and children. Wow!”

Caledon East students work together to achieve a sense of community. They care about each other, their teachers, and their building. Student Bystanders Show Assembly Audience How to Stand Up Against Bullying

We spent the day today with the students at Redstone Public School in Greater Toronto (Richmond Hill). We talked about the character trait of the month, which for January is optimism. We talked about bullying, the bystander, and how to deal with real-life bullying situations. The students learned by watching scenarios acted out by grade 7 and 8 students. We watched videos and listened to music. The students clapped and cheered at appropriate times and then later were silent when someone was left out of a game during a role-play. The students had empathy for that one person not picked for the team.

Obviously, the teachers and students care about the right things at Redstone School. They care about treating each other with respect and dignity. The Redstone Creed is called their Touchstone. Read it here. What do you think?

It was a sea of pink at Alloa Public School in Brampton today as Bruce Langford presented Stand Up Against Bullying Assemblies to the students. Pink shirts, pink bracelets, pink hair, pink socks, pink sweaters hats and pants all helped get the point across to Stand Up Against Bullying. Role-plays about how bystanders can change to make a difference helped the students realize that even ONE PERSON can help to reduce bullying. That ONE PERSON can be YOU. Cyberbullying Program at Coledale Public School

The 7 steps to Cyber-safety were talked about and taken seriously by students and staff at Coledale Public School in Toronto (Markham) on Friday.

Step # 4: Never meet people you have met on the web.

The above cyber-safety/internet tip was highlighted in a role-play where two girls arranged to meet someone at the mall. This was no stranger. After all, one of the girls had been chatting on-line with ‘Georgina’ for three months. Suddenly she was in town for a swim meet and offered to meet in the food court at the local mall. Gasps could be heard from the audience when it turned out ‘Georgina’ was not a 13 year old girl at all, but in fact a 43 year old man.
Police became involved and the potential victims were protected from the close call.

How Can Bullied Children Learn From Role-Plays and Video Clips?

The sun is shining, the breeze is blowing and the country air is fresh and clean. A bullied child would not notice these things. That child would be wondering how to deal with the next put-down. It is sad that in our society, children must deal with bullies far too often. Bullying must stop and as adults we must work toward that goal.

We are near Glencoe, Ontario at Mosa Central Public School, where we’ve just finished presenting three ‘Stand Up Against Bullying assemblies. Mosa Principal, Paul Cordick gave Bruce Langford top marks for his delivery of the bullying prevention programs. Students and teachers also appreciated the assemblies which effectively use role-plays and video clips to teach children to deal with bullying.

taught and practiced daily. The grade 7,8 students took the messages from the ‘Stand Up Against Bullying’ assembly seriously and got involved in the discussion which was part of their assembly. Younger children enjoyed the interactive format of Benny DL’s live ATFM broadcast.

The spirit of community came across loud and clear at Mosa Central. No matter how large or small your school is, remember to keep the spirit of community alive and well by being a positive role model and to stand up against bullying whenever it is safe to do so.

Colonel Cameron Public School

Mrs. Cindy Kramer of Colonel Cameron Public School in Corunna (Lambton Kent District School Board) was excited about the Stand Up For Respect Bullying Prevention assemblies by Bruce Langford and Stand Up Now Productions.
A role-play about a student who was shunned by team captains helped students identify with the person. We talked about empathy and how empathy means putting yourself into someone else’s shoes. We talked about bystanders who see or hear meanness and do nothing about it. Bystanders are not bad people. Maybe they just didn’t know what to do. Maybe they were scared. Maybe it happened so fast, they didn’t have a chance to act. Even adults will be bystanders sometimes. As adults, we always need to be aware that it is our responsibility to protect children. Be visible and keep an eye open to make sure our children are safe. We do need to teach our children to stand up for themselves and others, but we need to also teach them to stay safe.
As part of our assemblies today, adults and kids vowed together:
“I will stand up for respect”.
We met many respectful people at Colonel Cameron Public School and received a warm and caring welcome.

5. Be a role model who will inspire others.
6. Live your life as a positive example for people to see.

Bullying Hurts, Bystanders Can Make a Difference!

That was the message sent out by Bruce Langford at Clark Boulevard Public School in Brampton today. Bruce is DJ Benny DL with radio station ATFM.
Children acted out scenarios where it was clear the bystander could change the series of events. Then ATFM went on the air to talk about it and take callers.

Behavioural Teaching Assistant, Mary Lou Hughes was pleased. “Great follow-up to what we’ve been doing with Kelso’s Choice,” she said.

A Gym Wall Message at Mount Carmel-Blytheswood School

What is MCB? It is Mount Carmel-Blytheswood Public School in Leamington in the Greater Essex County District School Board.
‘Awesome’ was the word to describe the reception we experienced at Mount Carmel-Blytheswood yesterday. The ‘Stand Up Against Bullying’ theme song was playing through the halls. The children could hardly wait for the assemblies to start. Principal, Mr. Kris Marentette was pleased with the student assemblies and parent night and said he would pass that on to others in GECDSB.
The students and staff shared positive comments about the student assemblies and the parent night presentation which included songs, a student skit, information, prizes and interaction with the children.
